Keeping Your Cast Safe During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Updated: May 11, 2020

Theater Tip Thursday! This is for producers and directors. So far, I have a play coming up and I have to do things a bit different considering what's going on right now. So here are some tips that may help you plan an event or play. (Update!!! play has been canceled toCOVID19. But when things are back to normal, and there is a vaccine, these are the steps that I will take for cast and audience members.)

How to keep your cast/crew safe during this Corona Virus Pandemic.

  1. All Audience goers and staff must wear mask and gloves at all times without exception.

  2. Have assigned seats in the dressing rooms. (Actors use their own chair for the duration of the run or during performances.)

  3. Have pre-paid tickets only and allow guest to keep them once they arrive. (keep count with clickers and allow 1 person to write down ticket numbers.)

  4. Provide tissue.

  5. Have cast pre-sign programs for audience goers. (This will insure that the cast limits exposure to germs.)

  6. Consider digital programs.

  7. Each cast member should have their own pen or marker when signing. (Don't take pens from audience members.)

  8. Take professional cast pictures and make them available for purchase to audience members instead of cast taking photos with audiences after the performance. (Audience gets to bring home a keepsake and cast is safe.)

  9. If doing a VIP reception, choose caterers that will serve the guest, instead of self- serve.

  10. Only use certified catering companies. (May cost more but worth the safety of your guest.)

  11. Provide hand sanitizer stations and wipes in the restrooms and near concession.

  12. Only sell closed or bagged food during intermission.

  13. Have your servers wear gloves at all times and change them frequently.

  14. Have venue insured.

  15. Consider selling souvenirs online and shipping to guest later.

  16. Consider allowing guest to upload reviews of production online, instead of in person interviews. (The mic can hold germs.)

  17. If ministering after play, pray corporately. (We walk in faith and in wisdom.)

  18. Encourage theater guest not to congregate after play is over.

  19. Pay cast electronically and not with cash.

I hope this helps someone who may be hosting an event.
